Acne and Rosacea Experts
Acne and rosacea experts are dermatologists that specialize in the treatment of outbreaks and flare-ups of acne and rosacea.
Acne is a common skin condition that shows up as outbreaks of bumps called pimples or zits. These typically appear on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne begins when the pores in the skin become clogged and can no longer drain sebum (an oil made by the sebaceous glands that protects and moisturizes the skin). The sebum build-up causes the surrounding hair follicle to swell.
Acne can be categorized by its severity. Mild acne describes a few scattered comedones (whiteheads or blackheads) with minimal inflammation (no pustules). Moderate acne describes a denser collection of comedones as well as red, inflamed, pus-filled lesions (pustules). Severe acne, also called nodular or cystic acne, describes widespread and deep lesions that are painful, inflamed, and red. This form of acne is likely to lead to scarring if left untreated.
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness and swelling of the face that can also affect the scalp, neck, ears, chest, and back. Those afflicted with rosacea may first notice a tendency to flush or blush easily. The condition progresses to persistent redness, pimples, and visible, threadlike blood vessels (telangiectasias) in the center of the face. These skin changes can eventually spread to the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose.
There are four subtypes of rosacea. Rosacea patients may have more than one subtype at the same time. Ocular rosacea may occur alone, with no changes to the skin.
- Subtype 1: Facial Redness. Flushing and persistent redness. Visible blood vessels may also appear.
- Subtype 2: Bumps and Pimples. Persistent facial redness with bumps or pimples.
- Subtype 3: Skin Thickening. Skin thickening and enlargement, usually around the nose.
- Subtype 4: Eye Irritation. Watery or bloodshot appearance, irritation, burning, or stinging.
